While we do like to talk about the advantages that Z-Wave has to offer for energy efficiency, home security, and overall peace of mind, there’s another aspect to having a smart home that we feel isn’t talked about nearly enough: practical jokes. That’s right—your Z-Wave system can be used to spread a little cheer amongst friends and family.
Here are a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing:
If you have motion sensors and smart lighting in your home, you might have the system set up to turn on the lights when someone enters the room. Imagine their confusion when everywhere they go, the lights turn off instead of on! If your motion sensor allows for different time settings, you could design the system so that the lights turn off in the bathroom 30 seconds after someone goes inside.
How many times have you hidden in wait, not knowing when your prankee will walk into the room? Add some Z-Wave door or motion sensors to your home, and you’ll remove that uncertainty. You can get an alert on your smartphone whenever the person you’re pranking is nearby. Then it’s go time!
If you have a Z-Wave siren with multiple programmable chimes, you could always set the system to give a nice friendly chirp at random times throughout the day. Your prankee will go crazy trying to figure out what the noise is and what’s causing it. If the person you’re pranking is used to hearing the alarm for certain events, such as notifying everyone in the house that someone has entered the front door, you could tell the system to chirp even if no one has arrived. It’s all about keeping them on their toes!
Those three examples are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to having fun with your smart system. By controlling your home’s lights, alarms, doors, and more, you can make technology work for you.
So what do you need to get started? We answer that question in more detail here, but generally speaking, you’ll need a smart hub like Wink or SmartThings and a few devices such as these:
Alarm Siren: This device has ten unique sounds with three different volume levels.
Door/Window Sensor: Track who is entering or exiting a space, then use your smart hub to cause actions based on that information.
Motion Sensor: Track movement throughout the home. This device integrates with your smart hub to cause reactions such as turning the lights on or off based on movement in an area.
On/Off Plug: Use this nifty plug to turn lamps on or off using just your phone (or as a reaction to the motion or door sensor).
Have you used Z-Wave technology for pranking? We’d love to hear about it! Share your story with us on Twitter or Facebook.
