What is less well known is how to go about protecting your home from a water leak. Habitual maintenance is, unfortunately, a requirement for owning a home. If you ignore your appliances for years and years, you’re practically asking for one of them to break and start spewing water. Here are some things you should do every so often to keep your appliances in top shape:

  • Clean Your Gutters

If your gutters become clogged, the overflowing water could damage your roof or foundation and could even seep into the basement. Check the gutters regularly, and don’t wait until they’re overflowing to clean them out.

  • Get Your HVAC Inspected

HVAC units are a frequent source of water leaks, especially if the drain pan is left unattended for a long period of time. It can become clogged, leading to a leak. Have your HVAC unit regularly inspected by a professional to avoid this.

  • Change Your Washing Machine Hose

A washing machine hose is often one of the first things to break, and if it does, it can pump out a huge amount of water before you realize. Swap from a rubber hose to a steel one and consider replacing every five years.

You’ll know instantly if a leak happens, even if you’re not home at the time.

Z-Wave Water Main Shut-Off Valve

So what happens if you get a notification from the leak sensor that there’s a leaky pipe or broken washing machine? If you’re home, you’ll probably rush to your water main and turn it off while you try to fix the issue.
